National Accountability Bureau on Wednesday approved seven references and four inquiries against top officials of Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco), Pakistan Railways (PR), Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) and some other departments


ISLAMABAD, Oct 27 The National Accountability Bureau on Wednesday approved seven references and four inquiries against top officials of Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco), Pakistan Railways (PR), Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) and some other departments.
The decision to make references and inquiries was taken at the first meeting of the NAB`s Executive Board, presided over by its newly-appointed chairman, Justice (retd) Deedar Hussain Shah.
The NAB chairman asked officials of the bureau to ensure quick completion of investigations and filing of references in different cases of corruption, a NAB spokesman said.
Mr Shah approved a number of inquiries and investigations even in cases pending since long because of indecision or some other reasons. Seven references were allowed to be filed.
Under NAB rules, the bureau first initiates an investigation on complaints it believes to be reliable. In the second stage it starts inquiry and in the third, references are made.
Prominent references approved at the meeting related to Abdul Khaliq of Lahore, who faces charges of misappropriating Rs205 million.
In another case of misappropriation of funds in Lahore`s Mass Transit System, a reference has been ordered against Shamshad Gulzar.
The NAB also approved a reference against Anwar Rajwani of Ark Garments, and Mohammad Ashraf of Noorani Corporation for non-payment of Rs380 million to a bank.
One reference will be filed against 17 people on charges of involvement in a land scam of Pakistan Post Office Employees` Cooperative Housing Society.
A reference was approved against Abdul Hameed Khan, former Member, Board of Revenue, in Khyber Paktoonkhwa, for having assets beyond his known means of income.
The meeting approved a reference against Ashfaq Khalid of PTCL, Quetta, for allegedly misappropriating Rs20 million.
The bureau ordered an inquiry against Pepco Managing Director Tahir Basharat Cheema in the light of Transparency International report. He was accused of having favoured some people in the purchase of a crane-mounted truck.
The purchase of locomotives for Pakistan Railways is a subject of inquiry.
The meeting also ordered an inquiry against CDA`s former chairman, Kamran Lashari, for allegedly allotting a plot to Siza Foods in Fatima Jinnah Park at a nominal price.
Due to repeated complaints and reports against the Ministry of Housing and Works, NAB decided to look into different housing scams.
The new NAB chief emphasised at the meeting the need for expediting the process of bringing more cases of corruption in the next meeting of the board.
Two separate petitions have been filed against appointment of the NAB chairman in the Supreme Court. One has been filed by Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, and the other by a journalist-turned lawyer
